Changes to the Search Function

The "Charities Search" function no longer provides access to the IRS Form 990s filed by California charities. To improve and expand our services to the public, the Attorney General´s Registry of Charitable Trusts has recently begun implementation of a new automated system. Once the system is fully implemented, the public will have Internet access to information on charities registered with us, including the organization´s reporting status and images of a charity´s IRS Form 990, its annual Registration Renewal Form (RRF-1), and other documents filed by the charity, such as its founding documents.

In the interim, a national database of IRS Form 990s filed by charities may be viewed on the GuideStar website at www.guidestar.org. The presence of a charity´s Form 990 on the GuideStar website means an organization is a federally recognized charity. It does not necessarily mean, however, that the nonprofit has complied with registration and reporting requirements of the Registry of Charitable Trusts. Charities for which Form 990s are not shown on the GuideStar website may have gross receipts under $25,000. Such charities are exempt from filing IRS Form 990 reports.

If you do not find the information you are looking for by visiting the GuideStar website, you can e-mail an inquiry concerning the charity to the Attorney General’s Registrar of Charitable Trusts.

The Registry’s goal is to make all the public information in our files available on our website. We appreciate your patience during our conversion to a new system.

Currently, using the search form below, you can still obtain some information about California charities from this search page. Searching by name, state registration number, Federal employer identification number, city, or ZIP Code, you can ascertain a charity’s official name and its address and state registration (“CT”) number. Please note, however, that this information does not indicate whether a charity’s registration is current. Further, the information was last updated in March 2007 and does not reflect newly registered charities or name and address information that was changed after that date.
